The Story of Wholly Crepe: From Pop-Up Dreams to Two SoCal Locations
If you’ve ever wondered how Wholly Crepe came to life, it actually started way out in Cuyamaca. Yep—camping. On the way home, we stopped by a little café in Julian where an older woman was serving fresh crepes. Something about that moment just clicked. I remember thinking, “I can do that.”
So I went home, watched a ton of YouTube videos, quit my job (terrifying but worth it), and bought my very first crepe equipment. No formal training, no fancy culinary school—just pure curiosity, hustle, and a whole lot of trial and error.
From Breweries to Brick & Mortar
Wholly Crepe actually started in 2014 as a pop-up vendor serving local breweries around San Diego. It was chaotic, fun, and probably the most exhausting setup/teardown life ever, but people loved the crepes—and that kept us going. We served almost all breweries in the San Diego area, including Ballast Point, Ale Smith, Belching Beaverand Coronado Brewing Company. Keeping in the family traiditon, both mom and dad, grandma, sister and nepews and neices all worked together, perfecting menu and trying out new stuff, which to this day is still being served.
In 2016, we took the leap and opened our first official shop in Poway on October 16. Two years later, we opened our San Marcos location on November 23, 2018. Having two locations in North County still feels surreal sometimes.
Surviving the Pandemic
Like every small business in Poway and San Marcos, the pandemic hit us hard. But our community showed up, kept ordering, kept sharing our posts, and honestly… that’s the reason we’re still here. Locals flock to our locations eager to support us and in need of face to face interactions. We’ll never stop being grateful for that.
Real Food, Real People
What separates our crepes from the rest? We’re not trying to be pretentious or overly fancy. No complicated food trends, no “chef-y” fluff—just simple, delicious crepes that locals actually like. And our service? It’s close to home, friendly, and we try to accommodate as much as we reasonably can. We’re a café that doesn’t pretend to be something we’re not. We just want to serve good food and make people feel welcome.
A Huge Shoutout to Our Team
We’ve been fortunate to have amazing employees over the years. One of the most rewarding parts of running Wholly Crepe is giving high schoolers in Poway and San Marcos their first real job. Watching them grow, gain confidence, and move on to bigger things—it never gets old.
Wholly Crepe has come a long way from that tiny pop-up serving breweries back in 2014. Whether you visit us in Poway or San Marcos, thank you for being part of our story. And if you’re new—come through. We’d love to serve you something simple, tasty, and made with a whole lot of heart.
9 years of making crepes at the cafes, and catering private and corporate events in San Diego, were still surviving and thriving. Hope to see you in one of our locations, say hi and maybetry the Wholly Crepe experience.
